Un nom qui ne doit rien au hasard<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of its construction, only one certainty remains: its name. The Moulin de Quincangrogne takes its name from the old phrase “qui qu’en grogne”, an expression that reflected the owner’s determination to follow his own path, whatever others might think.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

More than just a name, it tells the story of the Mill’s spirit. It evokes the independence, authenticity and character of a place that has spanned generations without compromising its identity. Even today, this history contributes to the singular charm of the estate and the atmosphere it exudes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The mills of the Marne,an ancestral<\/em> tradition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Moulin de Quincangrogne appears in writings as early as 1564, but its history is part of the much broader story of the mills of the Marne. As early as the 7th century, a first mill was operating near the Meaux market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Between the 12th and 13th centuries, wheat mills multiplied throughout the valley: there was one every 4 km, including 11 for the town of Meaux alone. During the same period, 4 mills were established in Chessy, though it is not known if the one in Mont\u00e9vrain was among them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

After the Hundred Years’ War, many facilities disappeared, replaced by industrial mills: tan mills for leather tanning, fulling mills for the textile industry, and oil mills.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Around 1650, the wheat mills resumed their activity. In the 19th century, industrialisation transformed them into flour mills: rollers replaced millstones, and the entire process was henceforth carried out on-site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Between 1860 and 1870, the majority of these mills were destroyed to allow for improved navigation on a newly canalised Marne.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

For centuries, the Moulin de Quincangrogne has spanned the eras and reinvented itself, from a watermill to a living space, all while preserving the memory of its history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

16th \u2013 17th century<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un lieu de l\u00e9gendes<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On raconte qu’Henri IV aurait fait construire ce moulin en hommage \u00e0 une belle meuni\u00e8re, et qu’il serait venu y chasser. Le ruisseau voisin portait d’ailleurs le nom de \u00ab Fontaine du Roi<\/strong> \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing today formally confirms this story, but this legend continues to inhabit the place. It inspired the name of the Henri IV bar, now located on the upper floor of the Mill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Late 19th century (circa 1870\u20131900)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un site industriel<\/em>\u2028en mutation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s son activit\u00e9 de moulin, le b\u00e2timent conna\u00eet une nouvelle vie industrielle. Il devient d’abord une m\u00e9gisserie<\/strong> (atelier de pr\u00e9paration des peaux), avant qu’un incendie ne mette fin \u00e0 cette activit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un projet d’usine de colorants voit ensuite le jour mais \u00e9choue. Le site accueille finalement l’imprimerie de Mont\u00e9vrain<\/strong>, dont le logo repr\u00e9sentait, avec une certaine ironie, un moulin \u00e0 vent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Middle Ages \u2013 circa 1865<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un moulin \u00e0 eau<\/em>\u2028sur la Marne<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This was the original activity of the Moulin de Quincangrogne. Like many mills in the Marne valley, it used the force of the current: the closely spaced bridge piers held back the water before accelerating its flow at the outlet. A pertuis, the ancestor of the lock, then allowed boats to pass through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pendant plusieurs si\u00e8cles, le moulin transforme les c\u00e9r\u00e9ales gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l’\u00e9nergie hydraulique. Son activit\u00e9 meuni\u00e8re cesse vers 1865, avec la mise en service du barrage de Vaires-sur-Marne<\/strong> et les transformations de la navigation sur la Marne.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Un cantonnement<\/em> pendant la Grande Guerre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, le Moulin change une nouvelle fois de fonction. Il accueille des soldats fran\u00e7ais en cantonnement, notamment une batterie du 12e r\u00e9giment d’artillerie<\/strong>, participant ainsi \u00e0 l’histoire militaire locale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

After decades of industrial activity, the Mill entered a new era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La RATP<\/strong> acquiert le domaine et transforme le site en lieu de vie et de repos pour ses salari\u00e9s. Le Moulin accueille alors des colonies de vacances, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d’autres b\u00e2timents remarquables comme la Maison de l’Horloge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

19th \u2013 20th century<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deux amis d’enfance acqui\u00e8rent le site et fondent le Groupe Marne & Nature<\/strong> avec une ambition claire : pr\u00e9server, restaurer et faire revivre ce patrimoine exceptionnel en lui donnant une nouvelle vocation autour de la gastronomie et de l’art de recevoir.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

September 2021 \u2013 present<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un patrimoine<\/em> qui reprend vie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The rehabilitation began in September 2021. An extensive restoration project was undertaken to reveal the potential of the place while respecting its history and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aujourd’hui, le Moulin de Quincangrogne retrouve sa vocation premi\u00e8re : un lieu de vie, de partage et d’accueil<\/strong>, o\u00f9 l’histoire ne se contemple pas seulement\u2026 elle continue de s’\u00e9crire \u00e0 travers chaque repas, chaque \u00e9v\u00e9nement et chaque moment pass\u00e9 au bord de l\u2019eau.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

After several years of work, Le Moulin has become a singular address in Seine-et-Marne: a bistronomic restaurant on the banks of the Marne, with a chic and warm atmosphere, where the setting is fully part of the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cuisine, created by Michelin-starred chef S\u00e9bastien Crison, celebrates a creative, refined and seasonal approach. Upstairs, the Henri IV bar extends the experience with bold mixology, in a setting suspended between sky and water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
